These wall plates are high performance units with extended range and also include an infra-red transmitter so that your remote control works from a different room.
The IR receiver and transmitter have extension cables so they can be placed so that they receive the signal from the remote and send the signal to the device directly (or reflected from a wall). This means the wall plate can be hidden behind furniture and the IR will still work.
